Choosing LED Sports Field Lighting

An outdoor sports field lighting upgrade starts with how the facility will be used. A school practice field, a community complex, and a stadium hosting recorded games can have different needs. Define the playing areas, schedule, and required performance before choosing fixtures or comparing prices.

Start with the Field and Level of Play

List every sport played at the facility, the field dimensions and the level of competition. Include practice areas, spectator seating and routes into and out of the venue.

Confirm the lighting criteria required by the owner, league, or governing body, along with any local restrictions on operating hours or light reaching neighboring properties.

Review Light Distribution Across the Field

Ask for a photometric layout showing the proposed fixture locations, aiming and calculated light distribution.

Review how evenly the field is illuminated and where glare or unwanted light could affect players, spectators and neighboring properties. A fixture’s wattage alone cannot show how it will perform on your field.

Check Existing Poles, Electrical Equipment and Access

For a retrofit, document existing pole locations, mounting heights, fixtures, and electrical supply.

Have qualified professionals review whether poles, mounting hardware, and electrical equipment are suitable for the proposed system. Replacement fixtures can change loads and mounting requirements, so reuse should be confirmed before it is included in the budget.

Also identify how installers will reach each pole, when the field can close, and whether the work needs to happen in stages.

Compare Operating and Maintenance Costs

Compare proposals using the same operating hours, electricity rate, and project scope.

Include installation, access equipment, controls, and expected maintenance alongside fixture pricing. For an existing HID system, consider total system power, including ballast consumption where applicable.

Ask about dimming and scheduling options, warranty terms, service access, and replacement components.

Savings estimates should be based on your facility’s documented equipment and operating assumptions.
