Flicker is the rapid, unintended flickering of light output. Human vision often masks it; high-speed cameras do not. In slow-motion or high-frame-rate recordings, even slight modulation appears as rolling bands, pulsing exposure, or “breathing” brightness.
For broadcast engineers and venue operators, that’s a deal-breaker: it reduces replay clarity, makes camera setup more difficult, and distracts fans both on-site and on-screen.
Engineers measure flicker in two ways. Percent flicker (also called modulation depth) indicates the variation between the highest and lowest light levels during a cycle: lower values are better, with 0% reflecting perfectly stable light. Flicker index (ranging from 0.0 to 1.0) considers the waveform shape itself, not just the peaks; it provides a more comprehensive view of temporal stability.
IEEE 1789 offers recommended practices: keep modulation low at mains-related frequencies and drive LEDs at high, stable frequencies (or steady DC) to reduce biological risk, visual fatigue, and camera artifacts. Essentially, if your lights are truly flicker-free, high-speed cameras stay clear.
AEON’s PRO, PNR, and ECO stadium luminaires are built from the ground up to provide flicker-free performance. With proprietary drivers that supply consistent current, they eliminate the ripple that causes banding and rolling bars on camera. Even when dimming, the light remains stable, so whether you’re filming at 24 fps or capturing ultra slow motion at 240 fps, the results are always sharp and dependable.
Here’s some features past clients love…
Temporal quality (no flicker) is only part of the overall assessment. Spatial quality is also important. AEON optics are designed to keep UGR < 19 for glare control, making sure outfielders can reliably catch pop-ups and spectators are not bothered by hotspots.
Additionally, a high CRI guarantees whites appear neutral and colors remain true, thereby enhancing batter’s box to the screen, on-field perception, and authentic camera rendering.
Tight horizontal and vertical uniformity improves ball tracking, depth perception, and overall gameplay readability from the batter’s box to the warning track.
Stadiums are harsh environments. AEON luminaires are designed for these conditions, with IP67 weather sealing, multi-kV surge protection, passive thermal management, and a >100,000-hour lifespan. Housings are shaped to withstand low wind loads and vibrations on tall poles. Modular, field-serviceable design (quick-connect drivers, lenses, and LED engines) minimizes lifts and reduces downtime.
In practice, you’re not just eliminating flicker, you’re gaining durability, maintainability, and season-to-season consistency.
Many first-generation LEDs omitted controls, leaving energy and flexibility unused. AEON fixtures come controls-ready (0–10 V standard) and connect seamlessly with HyLink® wireless for zoning, scenes, scheduling, and instant on/off without flicker during dimming. Run practice at 40%, pregame introductions at 100%, independently dim bullpens, and meet curfews with automated shutoff systems.
Controls reduce energy consumption, simplify game operations, and enhance entertainment visuals while keeping slow-motion cameras clear.
All three of our main products share AEON’s core: flicker-free drivers, UGR<19 optics, high CRI, IP67 durability, surge protection, and modular serviceability.
Already LED but still seeing issues? If slow-mo replays show banding or your phone captures rolling bars, that’s driver ripple sneaking into your pictures. Notice color shift or dim corners? That’s early LED engines aging and uniformity taking a hit. No dimming or scheduling? You’re burning full power when you don’t need to. Hearing neighbor complaints? Outdated optics are throwing glare off the field.
Upgrade to AEON and flip the script. Our flicker-free driver architecture cleans up video artifacts, precision optics tighten uniformity and tame glare, smart controls add effortless dimming and scheduling, and the whole system typically uses fewer watts: one project, brighter games, happier fans, and a cleaner broadcast.
See it on paper, then see it on camera. Request a free professional lighting layout to validate foot-candles, uniformity, glare, and aiming for your field with PRO, PNR, or ECO. Then run the dollars with our Sports Lighting Cost Calculator to quantify energy and maintenance savings over a full season slate.
If your lights create bands, bars, or fatigue, it’s time to replace them. Upgrade to AEON’s flicker-free system and give players, fans, and cameras the major-league clarity your venue deserves.
